At the 15th edition of the Sustainable Development Award, organised by the Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile and Ecomondo – Italian Exhibition Group, Pikyrent was recognised as one of the top 10 companies in the Circular Economy category for its RE Battery project.

This achievement highlights Pikyrent’s strong commitment to sustainable innovation and the development of new industrial models that successfully combine technology, environmental responsibility and economic growth.

“Receiving this recognition is an important achievement for our team and for the partners who share our vision of truly sustainable mobility. We are the first Italian operator to implement a comprehensive and scalable circular economy model for light electric mobility. Through RE Battery, we are demonstrating that regeneration can be more sustainable and cost-effective than manufacturing new vehicles. This represents a tangible step towards building an integrated ecosystem that combines vehicle refurbishment and battery re-engineering within a single, traceable circular value chain — an ecosystem we aim to help shape and promote.”

— Antonella Comes, CEO of Pikyrent

Recognising Italian Excellence in Eco-Innovation

The Sustainable Development Award is one of Italy’s leading initiatives celebrating excellence in environmental sustainability.

The 2025 edition recognised companies, startups and local authorities that demonstrated significant environmental and economic achievements, as well as strong potential for scaling and replicating their projects.

The award covered three main categories: Circular Economy, Decarbonisation and Climate Change Adaptation, and Nature Restoration.

Pikyrent received its recognition in the Circular Economy category, with the following official motivation:

“For the implementation of the RE Battery project, dedicated to regenerating decommissioned electric vehicles and reintroducing them into the shared urban mobility market, through the adoption of advanced standards for high-quality reuse and the development of a digital platform for remote diagnostics and traceability.”

RE Battery: Regenerate, Don’t Replace

The RE Battery project was created to give decommissioned light electric vehicles a second life, reducing waste, emissions and costs.

Currently operating in Bari, Turin and Milan, the initiative aims to complete the advanced regeneration of 1,500 electric scooters by December 2026, returning them to Pikyrent’s urban mobility fleet.

Looking ahead to the five-year period from 2026 to 2030, Pikyrent has set ambitious targets to:

  • Expand its regeneration model to more than 5,000 light electric vehicles, including not only scooters but also electric microcars used in car-sharing services, such as Zhidou, Citroën Ami and Fiat Topolino.
  • Develop a circular industrial value chain dedicated to the reuse and certification of traction batteries.
  • Reduce overall emissions by more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ compared with the production of new vehicles.

Combining Sustainability, Innovation and Social Impact

RE Battery goes beyond the technical refurbishment of vehicles. Its ambition is to establish a sustainable, scalable industrial model capable of delivering long-term environmental, economic and social benefits.

The regeneration process includes the integration of IoT modules and remote diagnostic systems, alongside the development of a digital platform to track and monitor vehicles throughout their lifecycle.

Thanks to this approach, the project can reduce vehicle acquisition costs by up to 65% compared with purchasing new vehicles, making electric mobility more accessible even in small and medium-sized cities.

The initiative also supports the creation of skilled employment opportunities, with an estimated 6 to 10 new jobs in the first year, alongside growing opportunities in testing, maintenance and end-of-life vehicle management.

Furthermore, in line with EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, RE Battery supports European policies promoting traceability, carbon footprint reduction and the recovery of critical raw materials, contributing to the transition towards smarter, more accessible and more responsible mobility.

A Recognition That Looks to the Future

This recognition marks another important milestone for Pikyrent, reinforcing the company’s mission to make sustainable mobility an increasingly tangible, everyday and circular experience.
