The Pikyrent team has developed the RE Battery project to tackle one of the biggest challenges in urban electric mobility: preventing the waste of decommissioned vehicles that are still functional and turning them into a sustainable, efficient and accessible resource.
Too often, electric vehicles are abandoned not because of technical faults, but because of perceived obsolescence.
RE Battery was created to reverse this linear approach and to show that truly sustainable mobility also depends on the smart regeneration of existing assets.
A New Life Cycle for Electric Vehicles
RE Battery is an advanced industrial regeneration project that aims to put at least 1,500 electric vehicles decommissioned by international operators back on the road, through a four-stage process:
- In-depth technical diagnostics
- Digital retrofit with IoT integration (GPS, CAN-Bus, remote monitoring)
- Safety certification and regulatory compliance
- Re-registration and return to operation
The result? Smart, efficient scooters, ready for a second life in shared urban fleets.
Real Sustainability, Not Just Claimed
Each vehicle regenerated through RE Battery avoids up to 800 kg of CO₂, for an estimated total of over 1,200 tonnes of emissions avoided compared with manufacturing new vehicles. Where possible, batteries are reconditioned; otherwise, they are handled by certified partners to ensure traceable recycling and material recovery above 95%.
All of this follows European circular economy principles: reuse first, then recycle. Less waste and more long-term value.
A Scalable Model with Real Economic Benefits
RE Battery was designed not only as an environmental solution, but also as an economically sustainable model.
- Acquisition costs are up to 65% lower than buying new vehicles.
- Break-even can be reached in 9 months, thanks to simplified maintenance and immediate vehicle availability.
- It creates local economic activity: technical workshops, certified technicians and industrial processes distributed across the territory.
The project is designed to be implemented by municipalities, companies, universities and local operators who want to invest in sustainable urban mobility without starting from scratch.
Already Active in Milan, Turin and Bari
RE Battery is not just a project on paper: it is already operating in three Italian cities and ready to expand. Its modular infrastructure makes it replicable wherever decommissioned vehicles are available and there is interest in launching regenerated electric fleets.
Whether in large or medium-sized urban contexts, public or private, the model adapts easily, offering a concrete solution for those looking for electric, sustainable and smart mobility.
Regeneration Is Already Possible. Now Is the Time to Act
With RE Battery, Pikyrent shows that there is a new path for urban mobility: one that reduces waste, makes the most of what already exists and creates environmental, economic and social benefits.
